It's Time for Action: Incorporating Active Learning Techniques in Your STEM Class
–
September 17, 2021Location: Prework + Synchronous Online Discussion
Organizer: CRLT-Engin
Audience: GSIs, IAs, and Postdocs
It is crucial to help our students with engagement and motivations. Providing multiple opportunities for students to think, write, and talk about what we are presenting, helps them learn more effectively and improves recall. Before the session, you will need to work through a module on the basics of and examples of active learning (45 min. of content). The synchronous discussion will give you a chance to tailor them to your teaching context this semester, whether it is lab, office hours, or discussion. Participants will also consider how these strategies are adapted to hybrid, remote, or in-person settings.

Making Groupwork Work in STEM
–
September 23, 2021Location: Synchronous Online Discussion
Organizer: CRLT-Engin
Audience: GSIs, IAs, and Postdocs
Group work is a key component of many engineering courses. Effective use of groups in the classroom can increase student learning and enhance students' problem-solving abilities if instructors ensure that all students are engaged and included. However, not all students find group work to be a positive experience. This synchronous seminar will incorporate materials and videos (featuring the CRLT-Players theater troupe) to help you identify ways to gather student feedback and use it to design successful group work activities.
